After a degree in Electronics Engineering and 3 years of experience in a synchrotron radiation facility (Elettra, Trieste), I have worked for 9 years at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Cambridge U.K., an outstation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Here I have contributed to the production of the EMBL databank, the Swiss-Prot and TrEMBL databases, and the early implementation of the access to proteomic data. I then worked for 3 years in the MicroArray group of Alvis Brazma, taking part in the realisation of MIAMExpress and of the Arrayexpress datawarehouse.

With Kirill Degtyarenko I have developed COMe, the ontology of bioinorganic motifs.
